K3 stands for three Kauffmans… Phil, the founder, and his two sons, Dustin and Matt.
Phil grew up on a dairy farm in Wisconsin. He inherited a farmer’s work ethic from his father, and his father’s father, but he didn’t share their passion for cows. So in 1995 he moved to Oregon and started working for a construction company in the small town of Halsey.
Before long he was managing the business, expanding the company’s services and nurturing growth.
In 2007 Phil earned himself a partnership. A few years later he bought the company outright and renamed it Blackstone Construction.
Phil isn’t the type to sing — or even hum — his own praises, so if you ask him about Blackstone’s success he always attributes it to his team.
"Let’s be honest… Many excavating crews look a bit unruly, like you might not want them hanging around your home or your construction project,” Phil said. “I guess maybe I’m just more particular about who I hire. I’ve always found really good, reliable people who show up on time and do what they say they’re going to do.”
In 2018 Phil decided to sell Blackstone and move his family to Madras. That’s when he started K3 construction with his son, Dustin and nephew Jeremy.
“We run a tight ship based on a solid foundation of Christian ideals and good old-fashioned, handshake service,” Phil says. “Our haircuts kind of give us away.
K3 is probably the only crew in Central Oregon where you still routinely hear “yes sirs” and “thank you maam’s”.
